MP3 players are now just a memory for most. Smartphones have almost completely exterminated them, but the most "resistant" versions, i.e. high-tech devices for audiophiles, have survived, but live more in the background. Now they're joined by Pioneer's XDP-100R, a sleek mobile piece that won't appeal to everyone, but that's not even its purpose.
Pioneer XDP-100R it is Android player for audiophiles, clad in a machined aluminum body. Comparisons can be made with Sony's MP3 music player Walkman ZX2, although Pioneer's player is much more wallet-friendly ($700 vs. $1,119). As a Pioneer representative said, the XDP was built for those who smartphone sound quality does not satisfy.
It supports a whole range of audio file formats (FLAC, MQA, ALAC, DSD...) and has two separate circuit boards, one for the processor, the other for the audio components, which according to Pioneer will eliminate digital noise. The XDP-100R will also support all stream Android apps.
