The novel The Great Gatsby is not only the best novel of the American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald. It is also a work that has been performed in countless versions both on theater stages and on movie screens in less than a century. On November 6, his first Slovenian performance will take place on the big stage of the City Theater of Ljubljana.
The story of the feverish twenties of the last century, when both the glitz and misery of American society were at their height, masterfully depicts the fate of unrequited love and the extravagant life of the wealthy elite. Ambitious hero, Jay Gatsby, before the First World War falls in love with the beautiful and rich Daisy. Born into a poor family in North Dakota, he presents himself to the spoiled beauty as the scion of a rich family, and while fighting at the front, she marries a real rich man, Tom. On his return, he is determined to get Daisy back. Illegal Businesses During Prohibition they enable him to get rich and arrange events in his luxurious mansion extravagant parties, and numerous rumors spin various myths about Gatsby and his wealth.

Daisy and Gatsby reconnect thanks to her cousin Nick Carraway, who by pure chance moves to New York and becomes Gatsby's neighbor and confidant. As an outside observer of debauched wealth, Nick is first attracted by the apparent glitz, but Gatsby's tragic end sobers him to the realization of the falsity and moral emptiness of the world in which Gatsby and Daisy live. His personal painful sobering up is followed by a more global one - stock market crash and recession, which shattered the grand and glittering American dream of the rich in the 1920s.
