The Psychology of Color: How Filmmakers Use Color to Manipulate Our Emotions

Some film critics say that the genre of a film can be recognized by the color of the film scenes. Namely, warm red tones are reserved for romantic movies, less saturated colors for apocalyptic movies, cool blue tones for horror movies, fluorescent green shades for science fiction, yellow for desert movies, saturated vibrant red tones for comedies, and for all other genres there are epic blue and orange. What do the filmmakers want to achieve with these colors and how much do they affect our emotions with the showering technique? More on that below.

Like music in an elevator or a waiting room, it has color the power to affect our well-being and mood, without even realizing it. People get as much as 87 percent of all sensory impressions through the world of color, and filmmakers are well aware of this. That's why the color shades of the films are no coincidence, and color psychology is a special branch of the film industry. With colors, films diligently and "covertly" manipulate our emotions.

Colorists in the seventh art follow Plutchik's wheel of emotions (Robert Plutchik was an American psychologist), a three-dimensional model that explains the relationships between individual emotions with a color wheel. Our response to color is true depending on the cultural environment and context, but there are also "universal" responses.
