In the feudal world of the Middle Ages, secular power was in the hands of the warrior class. Its core consisted of a relatively small but well-equipped heavy cavalry of knights. Medieval knights were an elite group of men who were raised in military skills from an early age. They were trained for close combat, as heavily armed, head-to-toe armoured riders on sparkling, specially trained horses. In the 14th century, chivalry gradually lost its former dominance on the battlefield. However, the ideals and values of noble warriors remained in the mentality of Western man for a very long time. In fact, we still remember them today – for example, in etiquette and the sporting principle of fair play. A walk through the collections of the National Museum of Slovenia will bring us closer to the legacy of the era when chivalry was at its peak.
