The film, which was six months in the making, tells the incredible story of three young women, Nadja, Maša and Katja. As members of the feminist art collective Pussy Riot, they performed a 40-second punk prayer in a central Russian cathedral.
Because of performance they were arrested and charged with religious hatred, leading to a trial that reverberated around the world and forever changed the view of Russian society.
The movie based on unlimited access and exclusive footage, it shows the real people behind the well-known colorful balaclavas. Following the incredible and difficult complications during the trial, we have the opportunity to observe three young women who resist with every logic against the wrangled judicial system. We learn from their relatives and friends what led these girls to transform from political activists to modern-day vikonas. While Nadia, Mass and Katya from the cage in the courtroom they defend against the accusations, other members of the collective Pussy Riot, who are still at large, are planning new guerilla acts and encouraging protest movements around the world. Shifting between farce and tragedy and back again, the film reveals how political and religious forces managed to make an example out of three young artists, who stepped out of line.
