In the past months, we paid a little less attention to the cooperation of the Maribor SNG with the New York Metropolitan Opera. Since it is a huge project of the (most) recognized American opera house, which enables audiences around the world to follow large productions - with transmissions in HD technology - the project should be given a little more attention this time. Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer slightly alters the story of Verdi's Rigoletto, moving it from 16th-century Italy to Las Vegas in 1960. According to the director, Rigoletto embodies the aforementioned time and world, as decadence is trapped in a ducal palace and the cast strives for as much power, money and beauty as possible. That it is a decadent period with a tragic end is already indicated by the central three characters: Željko Lučić as a court jester with a bent spine (Rigoletto), his beautiful daughter Gilda (played by Diana Damrau) and the dissolute and dissolute Duke of Mantua (played by Piotr Beczala). Rigoletto encourages his ruler and notorious womanizer in his pursuits to the point where he becomes involved with and kidnaps his naïve, infatuated daughter. The act leads him to seek revenge. So he hires an assassin to take the Duke's life. In a romantic entanglement, the daughter of Gilda is on the verge of death, as she sacrifices herself for the duke in naive love. When we imagine the story in Las Vegas in the 1960s, we have to adjust the characters a bit, because at that time, the city of glitter was constantly measuring the power between the sheriffs and the mafia.
