Shrine of Tears...
Shrine of Tears is a performance and installation in which the audience is invited to share earth's woes with Samantha Sweeting in a dollhouse. The artist soothes them with the milky tears of her breast, while the silhouette of their confessions is visible as a shadow on the walls of the house. A mechanical pump pumps milk in an endless loop, which is sucked by a white lamb. The performance and the subsequent installation belong to the artistic opus entitled La Nourrice (The Nurse), in which Samantha thematizes breastfeeding as the ultimate intimate experience. In her performances and installations, the artist translates the archetypal maternal experience into communication with visitors, with whom she shares ancestral memories from childhood before weaning from the mother's breast, myths that accompany motherhood, fairy tales and local folklore truths. In his work, he uses erotica to explore the tension between life and the death instinct, and pleasure and pain. In her latest works, adult breastfeeding alternates with working and playing with animals, and situations where lovemaking turns into falling asleep. Whether she's interacting with her lover, a stranger, or an animal, her intimacies create intense feelings of melancholy and tenderness.
