Science has found that there is a way to tell if a partner is going to cheat on us. They found that such people cheat more often.
This one study should have convincing evidence that beauty is a kind of "responsibility". Although physically more attractive people clearly have an advantage when it comes to finding a partner, research results show that it is more likely, that the relationship will fail and this is partly because they also like to find entertainment elsewhere, especially if they are unhappy with their current relationship.
Christine Ma-Kellams of Harvard University and a team of researchers first asked two women to rate attractiveness of 238 men in school almanacs aged between 17 and 18 years. The researchers then accessed ancestry.com and searched information on marriages and divorces these 238 men who took photos for the school almanac 30 years ago. Men who received a higher attractiveness rating were more often separated, however, the law had a shorter term of validity.
After that, the researchers also accessed data on divorces and marriages The 20 best actors and actresses from the IMDb portal and the 100 most successful celebrities according to Forbes. After removing duplicates, they were left with 130 stars. The women who rated the men's attractiveness in the first part of the survey also rated the celebrities' attractiveness. And more attractive celebrities were more likely to be divorced and usually married for a shorter period of time.
But Ma-Kellams and her team wanted to find out one thing in particular: are more attractive people more interested in alternative partners? More than 130 participants, slightly less than half in a romantic relationship, rated how strongly they were attracted to beautiful people of the opposite sex. Meanwhile, the researchers assessed the physical attractiveness of the participants themselves. The results revealed an interesting interaction between participants' attractiveness, their relationship status, and attractiveness ratings for the people in the photographs. More attractive participants in a romantic relationship rated the people in the photo as more attractive than those participants who were less attractive. In other words: those who were in a relationship and attractive showed more interest in the people in the photos.
The results can further enrich our understanding, how physical beauty affects people's lives. Although good-looking people seem to enjoy many advantages in life on average, such as higher pay, more personal happiness, and being perceived by others as nice and intelligent people, it seems that not everything is gold, what shines. According to the research, these people are supposed to be tortured jealousy and instability in romantic relationships.
Nevertheless, it is important not to give too much importance to the results: they must also be taken into account factors other than physical attractiveness, which may have additionally contributed to the results. The researchers excluded the influence of wealth in the case of celebrities, and the school almanacs were from two different schools - a prestigious school and an ordinary school. Also, the researchers did not ask the participants to indicate whether they had ever cheated.
When choosing a potential partner, we tend to think of beauty as an added value. Maybe it's time to let's consider what is really important for personal happiness and how to put yourself first.
