Sevnica in Posavje – Castle town

Sevnica, a sprawling town along the Sava, which used to be given its rhythm by a railway station, where today an old steam locomotive with red collars is on display, is admittedly quite far from the capital, but that does not mean that it is not worth a visit.

Centuries-old family inns offer you the obligatory and far-known flosser goulash and tripe; if such cuisine is not close to you, you can also find pizza from a bread oven in a newer inn across the street. The tradition of social life and good inns goes back centuries, when lively fair trade activity began here. People went to the fairs to sell and buy from near and far, even from Croatia, and many people were at home for several days. In Sevnica and the surrounding area, it was always good to sleep and eat, and the livestock that was bargained for at fairs was also taken care of. A Slovenian specialty of Sevnica is salamijada in the inn near Vrtovško. It is a real competition to see who made the most beautiful and tastiest dry salami, which the local salami association has been organizing for 45 years.

The mysterious castle daughter
In the town, over which stands a magnificent medieval castle, the construction of which dates back to the 11th century, the traveler is welcomed by attentive and friendly people. You'll find it hard to leave these places hungry and thirsty, even if you stop by just by chance. Otherwise, the castle history of Sevnica was marked by the Moscon and Auersperg families. Part of the castle has been extremely beautifully restored and decorated - there you will be shown the famous Baroque fresco The Four Seasons, the school and fire brigade museum, the gallery of local artists Ivan Razboršek and academician Alojz Konac, as well as the wedding and conference hall. From the castle, there is a wonderful view of the city and its surroundings, which invites you to see even more. But even Sevniški Castle is not without a castle love story. The truly mature citizens of Sevnica, born in the 1920s, know how to tell the story of the daughter of the castle, which the countess had with the emperor himself in Vienna, where she was supposedly a lady of the court. The emperor, out of love for his daughter, gave the countess the Sevnik castle, where they lived even after the fall of the empire.

From selected wines to waterfalls and tickling sparkling wine
There are many excursion routes, but a visit to Ajdovské gradac, an archaeological site above Vranje pri Blanca, where the remains of an early Christian settlement from the 5th or 6th century were found is almost mandatory. On the way, it is worth stopping at the tourist farm Klenovšek - Grobelnik in Podvrh (tel.: 07 81 88 176, 041 335 257), where you will be served a vineyard lunch and top wines from the local vineyards in a wonderful tasting cellar. The braver, and especially those with a slightly better condition, can go to Bohor, which hides four waterfalls in its heart. If you take the path under your feet in Sevnica, you will admire Bojanca and Bojavnik, while Ubiavnik and the most beautiful of them - Pekel - are a little away and accessible from Senovo. It is only a few kilometers to the nearby Selce nad Blanco. If your journey takes you there, stop at the tourist farm near Roštoharjevi. (tel.: 07 816 50 55). They will offer you delicious meat products. Wine lovers, and even more so those who swear by sparkling wines that raise the foam in the glasses and tickle the throat, just go to Orehova - to Mastnak's wine cellar (tel.: 041 690 136). If you go to Liska, you may encounter paragliders there, in good weather, who take advantage of the favorable thermal conditions above the Posavina Hills for exciting and long flights into the valley. You can also try to fly in tandem by yourself (Simon Urh, tel.: 041 612 277; and Roman Poljšak, tel.: 031 888 810).
