Living in a glass house may have a fairy-tale and alluring feel, but is it practical?
Architectural office dRMM found the optimal solution between a standard and a glass house, named Sliding House. Set in the countryside, in Suffolk, UK, it consists of the main part of the house, a guest part and a garage. An equally important part of the house, if not the most important, is the 20-ton mobile roof that moves around the house. The structure, placed on rails, is made of steel, wood and insulation and moves over the extension while revealing a glass section that offers an open view of the sky. In this way, we get the feeling of spaciousness, of living outdoors, as the glass roof continues into large glass surfaces that open up the view in all directions. The structure is powered by 4 hidden electric motors, and the batteries that power the motors are charged via solar panels.
