Intelligence is attractive. For the most part, people "prefer" those individuals that they themselves label and see as smart - and in this research, they found out something that the women of the world have known for a long time.
Matter the study the researchers found that men do prefer smarter women, but only in theory.
650 men who took part in the research came into contact with representatives of the opposite sex in various ways. When there was contact psychologically more distant (e.g. chatting via an online chat room), men reported that women who they self-rated as smarter than themselves like and that they are attracted to. But when they were in psychologically close contact (e.g. a live conversation), their experience has changed in such a way that they women's intellectual superiority no longer seemed attractive.
The researchers speculate that one possible reason for the change in this preference is that the participants felt in close contact with the smarter woman endangered, which they resolved by simply calling this woman unattractive.
