It's been a long time since we've piloted famous spacecraft from the Star Wars universe, such as the X-Wing and the TIE Fighter, in a video game environment. That's exactly what the latest official Star Wars-licensed big-budget product aims to do, putting us in the role of piloting the dying Empire and the increasingly powerful New Republic in the post-Return of the Jedi era.
Both a story-driven single-player campaign, in which we alternately take on the role of one pilot and the other, are available, as well as extensive multiplayer with several modes, from the classic showdown between smaller vessels to the destruction of opposing cruisers, including the cult star destroyers known from the big screens.
All those who enjoyed the space battles in the Star Wars series the most will come to their account in the new game Star Wars: Squadrons. This one focuses on the interstellar showdowns of cult vessels such as X-Wing and TIE Fighter. The package, which costs a relatively affordable 40 euros, consists of a story that follows two pilots, one for each warring side, in the time period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Extensive online multiplayer awaits pilots with many exciting modes. In addition to the classic deathmatch, five-on-five pilot modes and Fleet Battle, in which you have to attack and defend giant cruisers such as the Imperial Star Destroyer, are at the fore. This is where the graphic spectacle is at its greatest, and at the same time, the surprising depth of the game, which is not just a rapid-fire arcade game, is most evident. The most depth comes from team tactics and detailed tinkering with the internal settings of the eight ships, four on each side. Following the example of the ancient X-Wing and TIE Fighter, it is possible to redirect the power supply to power engines, weapons and shields, which can mean the crucial difference between life and death.
