With a large selection of movies and series on online portals such as Netflix, it is often difficult to decide which content to watch. Although indecisiveness is a part of everyday life, the reason why it occurs is quite interesting.
Researchers from of the California Institute of Technology revealed that the secret to the answer lies in the functioning of specific parts of the brain.
Test subjects had to choose the best honey during the experiment 6, 12 respectively 24 facilities. In this case, it was different types of jams. The scientists observed the brain activity and found that the subjects put the most consideration into deciding between 12 options.
Professor Colin Cameron explained that during the decision-making process it was possible to observe increased activity in anterior cingulate cortex (responsible for value and profit analysis) and striatum (responsible for determining the value).
Although humans have the freedom to make decisions, based on the findings, we can conclude that an excessive amount of different options in our brain causes confusion.
If we choose between 6 movies or series, we humans feel somewhat deprived. We believe that we will not be able to find a suitable one among such a small number of alternatives. When choosing between 12 objects we can simultaneously analyze the content in detail and satisfy our needs. The situation at 24 options it's a bit different, because we get lost in the flood of many movies and series quite quickly.
Do you also have a selection of movies and series that you want to watch in the future? We suggest you reduce it to 12 instances.
