Into a lonely and superstitious herd of zebras, a cub is born with only half of its stripes. Khumbo he is immediately ostracized and shunned by all the zebras - except his parents and boyish Tombi. In the middle of a severe drought, a praying mantis appears to Khumba, who shows him the way to the legendary watering hole where the first zebras bathed and thus got their stripes. When he is blamed for the drought and the death of his mother, the outcast leaves the shelter of his home to find a watering hole. But beyond the enclosure, he is easy prey for the tyrannical leopard Fang, who bullies all the animals in the Great Karoo. After barely escaping the opportunistic wild dog Skalko, Khumba spies with an unusual duo: the bulky and overly protective wild beast Mama Gnu and the insecure ostrich Beno, join Khumbi in search of a watering hole, and in the process encounter a colorful and quirky group of characters.
