A thousand islands or a thousand wonders of nature

Thousand Islands in Canada

The Thousand Islands is an area in Canada that consists of exactly 1,864 large and small islets, on which there is only one house or one tree. Can you imagine living on such a small island?

Cruising between Thousand Islands along the far edge of Lake Ontario and along the border between Canada and USA is definitely a real experience. The islands stretch for about 80 kilometers along the St. Lawrence, and most of them are located between Cape Vincent Bay and the port of Alexandria in the USA and the cities of Kingston and Rockport in Canada.

The islands are very different in size, and on some there is only a single house, on those even smaller and uninhabited, and only a few trees. This was also one of the criteria by which the islands were counted. Everyone must have at least one tree and be above the water level all year round. It is the largest of the islands Wolfe Island, which is approximately 29 kilometers long and 9 kilometers wide. About 1,400 inhabitants live there. Compared to it, the smallest island is named 'Just room enough', which in translation would mean 'barely enough space', says the little one. There is only one house standing on it and some benches standing right next to the wall of the house.

People access the islands by boat, and electricity is run underwater. It makes up twenty of the 1,864 islands Thousand Islands National Park, which is the oldest of Canada's national parks east of the Rockies. The park has many camping sites, hiking trails, and many family events take place there every year.
