The film takes place a thousand years after humanity has left the only home it has ever known. In the 21st century, the Earth became more and more unsuitable for life, there was less and less clean water and the air became too toxic to breathe. The new home of the Earthlings thus became the planet Nova Prime, several light-years away, where the Raige family also created a new life, whose father Cypher is, among other things, the legendary general of the United Ranger Corps. After a failed attempt to make Kitai's son a ranger as well, Mom suggests that Dad take him on a trip. However, the spaceship crashes in the most inhospitable place in space for humans, Earth. Cypher is badly injured and Kitai must embark on a perilous journey alone to send a signal for help. He faces unexplored terrain, advanced animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable extraterrestrial creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must thus learn to cooperate and trust each other if they want to create a chance to return home.
