What is daylight savings time?

Summer time is the practice of moving the clocks one hour ahead in the spring, to spend the evening in the light and reduce the use of artificial lighting. By "adding" an hour to the daytime, the evenings last longer and the mornings are shorter. This practice usually begins in the spring and ends in the fall when hours we move backj to standard time.

2024 clock shift: When does daylight saving time start in 2024?

In most countries that use daylight saving time, the clock change occurs on the last Sunday in March. So, in 2024 we will move the clocks forward on the night from Saturday, March 30, Sunday, March 31. This means that at 2 in the morning the clocks will show 3 in the morning, with which we will "lose" an hour of sleep, but gain more evening daylight.

Why do we have daylight saving time?

The concept of summer time is not modern. It was first proposed in the 19th century, but only became more widely accepted in the 20th century, particularly during the First and Second World Wars and the oil crisis of the 1970s, as a way to energy saving. The main reasons for its use include various factors. As daylight increases in the evening, the need for artificial lighting decreases, which theoretically means less electricity consumption.

Longer evenings encourage people to spend more time outdoors, which can be beneficial for physical and mental health. Some studies show that the energy savings are not as great as initially predicted. There are also concerns about health effects, as the clock shift can affect human biological clock, leading to sleep problems and other health problems.
