The film is an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Edith Wharton. The narrative takes us to the late nineteenth century. Newland Archer is engaged to the calm and inexperienced May Welland. When he meets Maya's cousin, Ellen Olenska, Archer's hidden passions are awakened. Ellen divorced a rich Polish count and thus became an outcast. Archer recognizes a kindred spirit in Ellen, so despite her past, he is convinced that she is the right woman for him. Then he finds out that May is pregnant.
