An interesting wooden extension that hugs a tree was added to a house in London.
The extension was designed in the studio for the client, architectural critic Rowan Moore 6a Architects. An ordinary terraced house built around 1830 was added volume with a wooden facade. It has a new bedroom and bathroom. The extension encroaches on the garden at right angles to the row of houses, but at the same time avoids the tree with its rounded curve. One of the family members uses a wheelchair, thanks to which the different levels of the house are elegantly connected by ramps.
The exterior of the extension is clad in recycled wood, while the interior walls are covered with white-painted wooden paneling, which looks fresh and homely. The interior furnishings are neutral and serve as a backdrop to bring out the windows that frame the views of the garden. At the very end of the new volume is a spacious bathroom, to which the skylight provides brightness, privacy and a wonderful view of the eucalyptus branches.
