Volvo XC40: the European car of the year that scared the competition

Already after the first drive with the new Volvo XC40, it was clear to us that the competition would be rightfully afraid of it. Fear of the fact that the XC40 is an extremely nice car in which the driver can feel the Swedish DNA in the design, materials used, minimalism, driving feeling and, of course, assistance and safety systems.

The new Volvo XC40 swept the competition in the European market and crowned itself with the title European Car of the Year 2018 and also has a prominent role in the new Tomb Raider movie. It's almost identical in size to the Volvo XC60, but otherwise it's said to be a great little SUV mainly due to the imaginative layout of the space inside and the smart placement of the storage surfaces. When comparing the car's size and style, its biggest rivals can be found between Mercedes-Benz's GLA-Class, the upcoming BMW X2 and Audi's Q3. Of course, there are differences between them, but it is the XC40 that probably made the best use of its attributes.

The Volvo XC40 was built on a new platform, which will be common to all upcoming models with the designation 40. The new XC40 was designed around the user to serve their needs as much as possible. It is the ideal partner for the urban environment, as it is not too big and is therefore agile enough in the hustle and bustle of the city. The exterior radiates Scandinavian design, especially stand out LED headlights with the symbol of Thor's hammer and Volvo's signature front fascia. The two-tone combination of bodywork and rims between 17 and 21 inches allow a variety of combinations and thus a greater degree of individualization. They didn't forget about the XC40 either R-Design equipment, which has modified bumpers, larger wheels, sport seats and a section of upholstery in lava orange.

Inside, we are greeted by minimalism that mixes with modern technology. The gear lever is now electronically controlled and also minimalistic. The interior offers a lot cleverly designed storage areas. In the door you will find a compartment big enough for a laptop and a water bottle, while in the center console you have a handy trash can and a big enough opening for a box of tissues. Compartments for storing smaller items can even be found under the front seats. It has a luggage compartment 460 liters volume and can be expanded up to 1,336 liters.

The Volvo XC40 will have two engines available at the start of sales, later they will be joined by others, including electric ones. Gasoline colors are represented by the T5 z engine 247 horsepower, four-wheel drive and automatic transmission. The diesel engine is marked D4 and 190 horsepower. It also has an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. Soon it will be possible to order the XC40 with a diesel engine with 150 horsepower and two gasoline engines with 190 and 156 horsepower, respectively. In terms of technology, we must point out the assistance systems, which are all of the latest generation, and we also have smartphone connectivity enabled, which further increases the car's usefulness.

A ticket to the world of the Volvo XC40 with a T3 engine, manual transmission, front-wheel drive and Kinetic equipment, with the addition of the Business and Light additional equipment packages, costs 29,990 euros. You can also think of the same combination with the D3 engine, which will cost you 31,990 euros. But if you want the D4 engine with automatic transmission, all-wheel drive and Momentum trim, you'll have to shell out 39,990 euros. Of course, additional equipment packages are also added here Business and Light. This year, the Volvo XC40 will be available here for approx 100 customers, so get in line quick so you don't miss out on this great little compact SUV.
