Walking on the rainbow

Every day in the Castro, the district of San Francisco, will be even more beautiful from now on. Residents there will be able to walk along straight rainbow pedestrian crossings!

It's recent Castro completed the tender of the project for extensive landscape restoration. They received quite a few suggestions, including a design inspired by Muni cars. A quarter with strong homosexual community voted the proposal with the loudest message – rainbow symbols of pride and solidarity towards diversity.

The city will do so 37,400 dollars for installation rainbow pedestrian crossings on at the intersection of 18th Street and Castro Street, which should be completed by June, when the annual Pride Parade will take place there. "Rainbow Honor Walk" will ensure not only a strong message, but will also honor with plaques the names of LGBT civil rights activists (Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender Community). The project will also include sidewalk widening, tree planting, new road paving, additional bike lanes and street lighting improvements.

Two years ago, a similar project of rainbow crossings was also undertaken in Los Angeles West Hollywood, which soon became popular and a gay-friendly destination.
