What happens to our body and brain if we don't get enough sleep?

People often forget the importance of quality sleep. Students study late into the night in order to get a better exam grade, while adults often do their last work duties until the morning hours. This can leave lasting effects on our body.

Matthew Walker, professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, in his new book Why we Sleep deals with the effects of sleep deprivation. What problems can arise if we don't sleep enough?

The first most recognizable effect is memory loss. The center in the brain, which takes care of creating memories, needs a sufficient amount of energy, which we get through sleep, for its operation. This makes us feel like we are suffering from amnesia. In more severe cases, it may even develop Alzheimer's disease. When we sleep, we secrete a toxic protein from the brain, which is responsible for the onset of this disease.

With a sufficient amount of sleep, we will be fine felt younger. Men who sleep 5-6 hours a night have testosterone levels equivalent to men 10 years older. This reduces their sexual power.

Attention! If you don't sleep enough, there is also said to be a higher chance of developing cancer. After just one night with 4-5 hours of sleep, the number of cells responsible for killing cancer cells decreases by as much as 70 %. Another danger that should prevent us from lack of sleep is a heart attack. Lack of sleep is reflected in a reduced heart rate and increased blood pressure.
