White rainbow - an extremely rare natural phenomenon

White marigold over Scotland

Did you know that there are other types of rainbows in addition to the normal one, i.e. the one consisting of the entire spectrum of colors? You may have come across a multiple rainbow yourself, rarely have you witnessed a duplicate. But you probably didn't know that a rainbow can also be monochrome, that there is a Moon rainbow and a rainbow in the fog. It was this natural phenomenon that Melvin Nicholson encountered and captured in a photographic lens.

British photographer Melvin Nicholson is during a walk in Scotland (Rannoch Moor) encountered an unusual natural phenomenon – white rainbow. He managed to capture the "albino" rainbow with his camera Canon 5DS.

And why is the rainbow white? Usually the rainbow we see in the shape of an arc, consisting of the entire spectrum of colors, arises due to refraction and reflection of sunlight in water droplets in the air. But when it arises in the fog, is white. Just like a rainbow in the rain, it is created by the reflection of light in the drops, but because there are many of them smaller than rainy ones, they refract the rays more. Colors are blurred, because the bands for each color are wider than in the rainbow in the rain and consequently overlap. Therefore, it is completely white, only on the inside and outside it is light a little red.
