Why should you sleep in a cold bedroom?

When do you think about what temperature you sleep at? Well, you should! Scientists say that there is an optimal temperature for sleeping. Read what temperature is best to sleep at and why it is good to sleep in a slightly cooler room.

Christopher Winter, executive director of the Center for Neurology & Sleep Medicine in Charlottesville, says that for optimal sleep, our bedroom should have between 15 and 19 degrees Celsius. Temperatures above 23 degrees Celsius and below 12 degrees Celsius can disturb sleep.
Why? During a 24-hour time period, our body cools and warms. Our internal temperature is usually highest in the early afternoon and lowest around 5 am. When we sleep, our body cools down. And if we help the body maintain a lower temperature, we will fall asleep faster, and our sleep will be deeper.
Cameron Van den Huvel from the research center UniSA Center says that the body starts to lose heat about an hour and a half before we fall asleep, which in healthy adults  increases the feeling of fatigue.

Benefits of sleeping in a cooler room:

1. We fall asleep faster
It's pretty simple math. Namely, if we provide the body with an environment so that it can fall asleep comfortably, it will do so faster. If it's too hot or too cold, our body will begin to lose energy trying to regulate its temperature, leaving us tossing and turning throughout the night.

2. Better sleep
When the body is calm and not trying to regulate its temperature, we fall into a deeper, more restful sleep. Research in Australia have proven that sleeping in a cooler room can help reduce some types of insomnia.

3. Youth
It has been proven that sleeping in a room that has between 15 and 19 degrees Celsius, allowing our bodies to release more melatonin, one of our best anti-aging hormones.

4. Reduced risk of some metabolic diseases
V 4-month study found that sleeping in a room with 18 degrees Celsius not only helps burn calories while awake, but also increases the amount of good fat in the body. This enables the burning of stored calories. Among other things, this should also help reduce the risk of metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, over time.
