Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014: the best wildlife photos

Last Tuesday, the winners of the Wildlife Photographer award were announced in London, including three veterans of National Geographic magazine. The competition, this time hosted by the British National History Museum and BBC Worldwide, recognizes the excellence of nature photography at its core.

This year's award winners are Michael “Nick” Nichols, magazine editor National Geographic, who was named Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014 for his photography, among others "The Last Great Picture", and it also won in the category for the best black and white picture.

Among the winners are a photographer Brent Stirton and Tim Laman for special prizes Wildlife Photojournalist of the Year and the best portfolio.

Nichols said that the biggest challenge in photography is the wilderness, as they capture photos that surprise viewers and connect them with the intimacy of the wilderness. The veteran photojournalist has worked in swamps, jungles and ice for three decades. His unwavering commitment helped make a difference: thirteen national parks in West Africa were built with the proceeds of his photographs.
