Powerful, more economical and still 100 % Subaru

Subaru has finally taken a step into an electrified future—but in its own way. The new 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid combines a classic 2.5-liter boxer engine with an electric motor, meaning more power and better fuel economy, while maintaining symmetrical all-wheel drive. But is that enough to stand up to hybrid giants like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Honda CR-V Hybrid?

Subaru does not deviate from its roots when hybridizing, as the new Subaru Forester Hybrid The 2025 maintains the proven reliability and performance that have been the brand's hallmarks for decades. Under the hood is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated boxer four-cylinder engine that develops 162 hp (121 kW) and 209 Nm of torque, while the electric motor contributes an additional 118 hp (88 kW) and 270 Nm. The total system output is 194 hp (145 kW), which provides enough dynamics for everyday driving and carefree trips to more demanding terrain. It draws energy from a 1.1 kWh battery, which allows short trips on electric power alone, but due to its small capacity is not intended for long-term emission-free driving. Subaru remains faithful to its symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD), which was not sacrificed due to the hybrid system, which is one of the key advantages of this model.

Weight and ground clearance remain within off-road limits

The additional weight of the electric components is 136 kg, but the total vehicle weight remains under 1,815 kg, meaning the Forester Hybrid maintains its off-road versatility. Subaru has made no compromises, with ground clearance remaining at 220 mm, identical to the classic Forester. This means the vehicle remains fully prepared for snowy roads, muddy trails and nature trips – regardless of the weather conditions or the difficulty of the surface.

Fuel economy: better, but still not leading

Subaru promises a significant improvement in fuel economy over the standard petrol model. In the city, the Forester Hybrid is said to use 6.7 l/100 km, which is 40 % better than the classic version. On the highway, consumption stops at 6.9 l/100 km, which is a 25 % improvement. The total range with a full tank is up to 935 km, which is an outstanding result for an SUV with permanent four-wheel drive. Despite the progress, the Forester still does not reach the efficiency of its main competitors, with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Honda CR-V Hybrid offering slightly better figures. But neither of them has the characteristic gurgling sound of a boxer engine that is part of Subaru's charm and unique driving experience.

Digital interior transformation

The Forester Hybrid also features a technologically updated interior that is the most advanced in the model's history. The driver is greeted by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with clear and modern graphics that provides all the key information in one place. The infotainment system boasts an 11.6-inch vertical touchscreen that is more responsive and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Subaru has not forgotten about safety, as it is equipped with the EyeSight system as standard, which includes adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and lane keeping assist. The design changes are subtle, but the Forester Hybrid stands out with a special exclusive Daybreak Blue Pearl color, available only on this version.

Is the 2025 Forester Hybrid the right hybrid for you?

The 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid is a welcome upgrade to the model, delivering better fuel economy and more advanced technology while maintaining its signature ruggedness. However, it's not the most fuel-efficient hybrid in its segment and doesn't offer a long electric range, which could put off some buyers who want more emission-free driving. Pricing hasn't been officially confirmed, but it's expected to be a few grand more than the classic gasoline version. The key question is whether buyers will be willing to pay more for the legendary Subaru character, symmetrical all-wheel drive and proven durability that has earned the Forester a loyal customer base for decades.
