The Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman are ditching gasoline and entering the electric age. But don't worry—they're keeping the look, feel, and performance that fans love. Early data reveals a more than promising recipe.

If someone had told you ten years ago that Boxster went electric, we would probably just smile and think: “Oh yeah, then the 911 will also be powered by hydrogen!” Well, here we are – the year 2025, and Porsche has officially confirmed that the 718 duo will Boxster and Cayman will enter an all-electric era in 2027. Gasoline models have already ended their careers in Europe, their days are running out in the US, and the future is clear – electric.

But don't panic. Porsche does not approach electrification with the idea of “keep it quiet and boring”. On the contrary – the future generation 718 It's supposed to be just as fun, even faster, and maybe even more sophisticated than ever before. Here's what we already know.

Why is Porsche electrifying its sports icon?

Simply – because it can. And because it must. Porsche is among the most aggressive manufacturers in the transition to electric power. After the Taycan and now the electric Macan, the Cayenne EV is coming, and then the Boxster and Cayman are already waiting. With this, Porsche proves that electrification does not mean the end of sports cars – it just means a different definition of performance.

Porsche already develops and produces platforms, batteries and electric powertrains at the highest level. The new 718 EV will therefore be a product with a serious technical basis – nothing less than a real weapon for cornering.

Shape: a familiar silhouette with a modern signature

This is Porsche, so it's no surprise that the electric Cayman and Boxster will remain true to their compact, clean, and low silhouette. But importantly, judging by the spy photos, they will be quite similar in design to the Taycan, especially at the rear.

They will wear a classic four-piece front LED light signature, surrounded by more aggressive air vents and advanced aerodynamic design. The rear – despite rumors of an individual design – increasingly suggests that it will receive the Taycan's light bar. This will make the new 718 more futuristic, but still compact. Porsche has clearly found a balance between recognisability and freshness.

And another interesting thing – although there will no longer be an engine in the rear, the proportions of the car are such that it still gives the impression of a mid-mounted engine. An optical trick or a Porsche homage to the past? Maybe both.

Drive and platform: electric muscles

Electric Boxster and Cayman to be based on new platform PPE (Premium Platform Electric), developed together with Audi. It is the basis already used by the new Macan EV and the upcoming Audi A6 e-tron.

The platform enables an 800-volt architecture, which means extremely fast charging – up to 270 kW at DC fast chargers. This will charge the battery from 10 to 80 % in just 21 minutesThe battery pack will probably have a similar capacity to the Macan – so around 100.0 kWh gross (95.0 kWh usable).

In terms of power, the base models are expected to develop at least 300 hp (221 kW), while more powerful versions such as S or GTS, exceeded 400 hp (298 kW). Maybe even more – maybe Porsche will serve up a “Turbo” version with even higher numbers than we’ve already seen with the Taycan (up to 630 hp). For the first time in the history of the 718, it will be available four-wheel drive, but the basic versions will almost certainly remain faithfully rear-wheel drive.

Capabilities and range

If we look at the Taycan and Macan EV as a reference, then we can expect some serious numbers. Acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) should be around 2.8 seconds for more powerful models, while the basic ones will target about 4 seconds.

Final speed? Probably around 250 km/h (155 mph) – which is more than enough for an electric roadster. Reach should be among 400 and 515 kilometers (250–320 miles), depending on configuration and equipment.

Price and arrival – Porsche 718 Boxster

Existing models 718 Cayman and Boxster they cost approximately $74.795 or $76.895, meaning the EV versions will be slightly more expensive. Estimated starting price:

  • Cayman EV: around $78.000 (approx 72.000 €)
  • Boxster EV: around $80.000 (approx 74.000 €)

Given the inflation, additional equipment and high technology that Porsche will install, this is not even surprising.

Debut is intended for 2026, and sales will most likely start at the end of the same year as the model year 2027.

New chapter, same philosophy?

Porsche knows how to play with fire – but it also knows how to forge something legendary from it. The electrification of the 718 is not just a technical shift, it is a major cultural step. But judging by the Taycan, Porsche is the only one who knows how to make electrics emotional.

Everything indicates that it will Porsche 718 EV still enjoyable, balanced and sporty. It's clear that it will be different – quieter, with linear acceleration and without the classic engine sound. Will that be worse? Not necessarily.

For fans of performance, design and driving dynamics, the new Boxster/Cayman EV probably more refined than ever before. Those who swear by mechanical character will unfortunately have to look for a used model. But the future is inevitable – and if it has to be electric, then it should be made according to Porsche's rules.

2027 Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman EV They are not the end of sportiness. They are its next, electrified step – with a full heart and an empty tank.
