Many will spend the May Day holidays in the comfort of their homes, and if the weather is nice, they will go exploring nearby places. We offer all such people a bunch of ideas for discovering Slovenian beauties, as well as some just over the border - ideas for trips around Slovenia.

Refugees in Gorenjska

Instead of going to Bled, go to Begunje, a place below Karavanka, where you can climb St. Petra and marvel at the beautiful view of the surroundings. In Begunje you can find a number of other hiking trails, as well as museums, remains from another world and the old Kamen castle. You can also go on one of the cycling routes, and when you get hungry, you can refresh yourself in one of the excellent local restaurants.

Pohorje

The plateau, overgrown with a mysterious spruce forest, offers a variety of activities to spend the spring days. Pohorje can boast of a lot of hiking trails and beautiful views. One of the most beautiful hiking spots are the Lovren Lakes between Rogla and Ribniški Pohorje, which are located in a clearing overgrown with low pines. There are wooden paths around the lakes, which allow you to approach them and admire them from up close.

Goriška Brda

The Goriška Brda Mountains are a very popular excursion destination, especially in summer, when they are filled with juicy and sweet cherries. But even in spring it is extremely beautiful in Brdy. The peach, apricot and cherry trees bloom and are covered in white and soft pink flowers, which make the landscape even more fairy-tale-like. A trip to Brda is also perfect for anyone who wants to try a good drop of wine or delicious local cuisine.

A Scotsman

Near the Škocjan Caves, you can find the Škocjan Educational Trail, a circular trail only 2 kilometers long that takes you above the Reka River and teaches you about the beauty and natural attractions of the Karst. The route takes you through the picturesque villages of Betanja, Škocjan and Matavun, and along the way you are also accompanied by numerous information boards that teach you about karst phenomena. In the spring months, the river is especially watery and creates fairy-tale scenes inside the caves.

Cerknica lake

When the lake is full, it represents the largest lake area in Slovenia, but through the seasons it shows completely different faces. In the spring, when the snow melts, Lake Cerkniško fills with water, so you can go on it with canoes or even soups. Its area measures 26 m2, so you can circle it with a bicycle and see for yourself the rich plant and animal heritage that you encounter along the way.

Napoleon's route

Just across the Italian border, there is a well-maintained and extremely popular footpath that offers beautiful views of the Gulf of Trieste. There is also something special during Barcolana, as you have a beautiful view of the sailboats. The path is 3.2 kilometers long and is also suitable for the youngest, because it is strewn with small pebbles, they can be used on scooters or bicycles.
