Sunscreen is vital to protecting the skin from harmful UV rays, but most of us apply it incorrectly. Here are seven of the most common sunscreen mistakes we make and how to avoid them.

Using sunscreen is crucial to protecting our skin from harmful UV rays, but many of us make mistakes that reduce its effectiveness. While simply applying the cream may not seem like much, there are a number of factors that affect how well it works. From the wrong amount, using outdated products, to the wrong application time - these are all common mistakes that can be easily corrected. In this article, we'll explore the seven most common mistakes people make when applying sunscreen and how to avoid them to best protect your skin and stay safe in the sun.

1. We don't apply enough sunscreen

Most people do not use enough sunscreen, which reduces its effectiveness. For the whole body, the recommended amount is about 30 ml (one ounce), which is about one teaspoon. It is also important to apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before exposure to the sun.

2. We forget some parts of the body

We often forget to apply sunscreen to our ears, back of neck, scalp, feet and hands. These parts are also exposed to the sun and need to be protected.

3. We use outdated or improperly stored sunscreen

Sunscreen has a shelf life, usually three years. After this time, its effectiveness decreases. Sun cream should also not be stored in a hot place, as high temperatures accelerate the breakdown of the active ingredients.

4. We don't apply it often enough

Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Most people forget this important rule, which reduces protection against UV rays.

5. We use too little SPF

Dermatologists recommend using a sun cream with at least SPF 30. SPF 50 does not offer significantly greater protection and can give a false sense of security, as a result of which we are exposed to the sun for longer.

6. We use combined products

Products that combine sunscreen and insect repellent are not recommended, as the sunscreen needs to be applied more often than the repellent, which can result in overexposure to the active ingredients of the repellent.

7. We don't think darker skin needs protection

Darker skin does contain more melanin, which provides some natural protection from the sun, but this is not enough to prevent damage and skin cancer. Every skin needs adequate sun protection.
