Balcony garden – Fresh vegetables and fragrant herbs above the city bustle

On the terrace or balcony, we can easily create a garden where, with just a few skills, we can grow delicious snacks that will certainly enrich our menu. Hobby gardening is also an anti-stress activity that brings an immense dose of joy into our everyday life. Balcony garden... some quick tips.

Who doesn't want a beautiful garden full of blooming zucchini, plump tomatoes, sunny yellow lemons and intoxicatingly fragrant basil? Fresh fruits and vegetables and the tempting aroma of herbs they certainly conjure up a healthy and tasty meal, but what if a sunny garden is increasingly rare. The times when we could walk in the garden in the morning and gather fresh morsels, from which we then cooked lunch, are unfortunately, at least for the majority and especially those who live in the city, a time of the past, beautiful memories of childhood. So that this will no longer be the case, we will transform our sun-drenched balcony, terrace, yard and even the window into a mini-kindergarten, which will be a source of pride for us. If we don't have enough space, small sinks and cute earthenware pots will satisfy the basic requirements. Of course, this will not produce a winter garden, but the nursery will still provide fresh parsley, chives, basil, radishes, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, broccoli, peas, green beans, Swiss chard and strawberries. If we have enough space available for a slightly larger trough, we will even manage to grow sweet corn, which we will be able to roast on pleasantly warm August evenings.

Choosing a trough

When choosing a suitable container, make sure that it has openings at the bottom. We cover these with stones and only then pour the selected soil into it. For herbs, a 20 cm deep container is sufficient, for other vegetables choose one that measures at least 30 cm. Larger plastic troughs are the most suitable, some also provide a water reserve, which is a great innovation.

Choice of fingers

The most suitable finger will be light and airy. We buy a ready-made mixture in specialized stores, otherwise we also mix compost with ordinary soil.

Sunny position

The containers can be moved if necessary, as some vegetables like a lot of sunlight.

Watering and fertilizing

During the period of lush growth, water the vegetable once or twice a week, if necessary, more often. From time to time we also dissolve fertilizer in the water, but do not overdo it. If we water in the morning, be careful not to wet the leaves. Our little vegetable miracles will be happiest when they have water, so we leave a bucket on the terrace into which we pour water beforehand.
