Apple MacBook Neo: Is this the laptop that will finally retire your iPad?

The little "Safari Book" who wants to become the king of student halls and cafes

Apple has shuffled the cards again and thrown us a bone that smells of nostalgia but bites with futuristic efficiency – meet the MacBook Neo, the cheapest ticket to the world of macOS.

let's face it Apple loves our wallets. Usually, it likes to empty them completely, but this time they decided to leave us at least for some “avocado toast”. Before us is the MacBook Neo, the spiritual successor to that unfortunate 12-inch MacBook from 2015, which was so slow that you could make coffee, drink it and take a short nap while opening Excel. But this time the situation is different. The Neo is not just “an old laptop in a new guise”, but a thoughtful technological blow to all Chromebooks and cheap PCs.

Technical specifications that don't promise miracles, but guarantee a peaceful sleep

Under the hood of this feather-light aluminum machine (it weighs just 1.22 kg or 2.7 lbs) beats not the mighty M5 processor, but the A18 Pro. Yes, you read that right. It's the chip from last year's iPhone 16 Pro, except this time it's given a 5-core graphics processing unit (GPU) instead of six.

It may sound like a savings, but in a world where most people use their laptops to write emails, watch YouTube videos in 4K resolution, and endlessly surf the web, it's more than enough. The MacBook Neo comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage in the base version.

Specification Data
Processor Apple A18 Pro (5-core GPU)
Screen 13-inch, resolution >1440p, 500 nits, 60 Hz
Weight 1.22 kg (2.7 lbs)
Battery Up to 16 hours of autonomy
Connections 2x USB-C (no Thunderbolt), 3.5 mm jack
Camera 1080p FaceTime HD (no notch)

A design masterpiece or a cost-saving measure?

Apple has chosen a color palette for the Neo that any Instagram influencer would approve of: Indigo (blue), Blush (pink), Citrus (yellow), and classic Silver. What's special? The keyboard is slightly tinted to match the body, giving it a sense of integrity that you simply don't get with the competition for this price.

This is where my “Clarksonian” cynicism comes into play. To reach the price of 599 $ (about €550), they had to cut somewhere. The base model doesn’t have a Touch ID sensor (you’ll have to pay an extra 100$ for the version with 512 GB of memory), and the trackpad isn’t haptic, but a classic mechanical one. Creepy, right? Well, not really. The click is still “Apple” precise, just the feel is a bit more retro.

“It’s basically a luxury Chromebook for people who don’t want to deal with Google’s half-baked products and want their laptop to actually fit their iPhone.”

Driving on the efficiency highway

The screen is 13-inch, with a resolution exceeding 1440p and a brightness of 500 nits. It's not exactly Liquid Retina XDR, which will burn your retinas, but for working in a cafe or a lecture hall it will be more than excellent. The biggest trump card? 16 hours of battery life. Because the A18 Pro chip is extremely energy-efficient, the Neo will get through an entire workday without finding an outlet, which is practically unheard of in this price range.

Acceleration? The MacBook Neo won't break records for editing 8K video - you'd have to buy a MacBook Pro and sell a kidney for that. Its ultimate speed is geared towards "mere mortals". Opening apps is a snap, and multitasking is smooth until you start asking it to do things that would scare even NASA.

Conclusion: Is this a car you need, or just a fashion accessory?

The MacBook Neo is a genius move. At $599 (and $499 with the education discount), Apple isn't just selling a computer, it's selling a lifestyle. Why buy an iPad with an expensive keyboard that costs more and still isn't a "real" computer when you can get an all-aluminum, thin, and powerful laptop?

Sure, it doesn't have Thunderbolt, it doesn't have Face ID, and the base model forces you to enter a password like it's 2010. But let's face it, for the money you get the best-made laptop on the market. The Neo isn't for tech enthusiasts who measure every millisecond of graphics rendering. The Neo is for those who want something that simply works, looks fantastic, and doesn't cost as much as a used Volkswagen Golf.

Apple finally realized that we don't all need a rocket, some of us just need a very stylish and reliable city scooter. And the MacBook Neo is just that – the best scooter in the world.
