AGI: Are we there yet? And what awaits us in the future?

Artificial general intelligence: already here or still on the way?

If you ask experts when we will achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI), you will get different answers. Some say we will get there in 2025, others claim that AGI is already here – it’s just a little different than we imagined.

If we define AGI as a system that can perform any intellectual task as well as or better than a human, then we are very close. The latest AI models, such as GPT-4, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and DeepSeek, already surpass human capabilities in many areas – from coding and science to creative writing and strategic thinking.

But at the same time, the question arises: is this really AGI, or just a very advanced, narrowly focused intelligence that seems smarter because it has access to unlimited amounts of information?

What can we expect in 2025?

  • Progress in AGI: If we haven't already achieved AGI, we will likely have systems that score 200 or higher on IQ tests by the end of 2025, meaning they will be exponentially smarter than the best human minds.
  • AI as a scientific accelerator: Artificial intelligence will help make discoveries that would otherwise not be expected for decades. AI is already revolutionizing fields such as biology (e.g. AlphaFold), medicine, physics (the search for a theory of everything), and material science.
  • Humanoid robots in businesses and homes: With advances in physical AI systems (such as those being developed by Tesla and Figure AI), we will see the first truly useful humanoid robots in factories and perhaps even homes.
  • Explosion of AI agents: People will have digital clones – personal AI assistants who will know our preferences, communicate on our behalf, and perhaps even do work for us.
  • AI in politics and economics: It is expected that AI will begin to influence political and economic decisions in ways that we do not yet fully understand. We can expect more regulations, but also more countries that will use AI to optimize their systems.

What will happen in the next 5 years (until 2030)?

  • Raising AGI to superintelligence: With the development of AI models that can improve themselves, we may see the first system that is a million times smarter than a human in the next five years.
  • Artificial Intelligence as Chief Scientist: Almost all new scientific discoveries will be mediated by AI – from new materials to solutions to diseases and climate change.
  • Abolition of many professions: Most office work will be automated, as will many technical professions such as programming, accounting, and legal services. This will cause economic changes that are difficult to predict today.
  • The rise of digital clones: People will have their own AI counterparts who will be able to perform tasks for them – from business meetings to writing emails.
  • AI as the main source of truth: Because AI will be able to analyze all data in real time, it will become the ultimate advisor for politics, economics, and society.

What will happen in the next 10+ years (until 2035 and beyond)?

  • Transition to a world of complete automation: Work as we know it today will almost disappear. Instead, we will have systems that can produce everything we need.
  • The gradual integration of AI into the human brain: Advances in neural interfaces (e.g. Neuralink) will allow humans to connect directly to AI and augment their abilities. Or reading thoughts and brain waves, as Meta envisions. So devices will sense your thoughts, without implants.
  • Solving the most difficult scientific problems: AI will likely discover the fundamental laws of the universe, a solution to aging, a new level of energy (perhaps nuclear fusion), and much more.
  • Will AI take over? If artificial intelligence really does become a million times smarter than us, the question arises: will we still be the ones running the world, or will we have to ask AI for permission?
  • Humanity will have to redefine itself: When there is no more work, the question will be what it means to be human and how we will find the meaning of life in a world where everything is within our reach without effort.

Are we ready?

Artificial intelligence is no longer a thing of the future – it is already here and developing faster than we ever expected. This will bring about a lot of positive changes in the coming years, but also many challenges.

The key question is whether we can channel this new power in the right direction. Will AI serve humanity and eliminate suffering, or will it become a tool of destruction due to human stupidity?

The answer is in our hands – until AI takes it away from us.
