If the 2025 Audi Q5 Sportback had hit the roads five years ago, it might have wowed the masses. Today, however, it seems to be chasing a train that has already departed, bringing too little new to stand out in today's SUV world.
Audi Q5 Sportback 2025 is another in a series of so-called "coupe SUVs" that try to combine practicality and sportiness. But the problem is that it is no longer something new or exciting. Its design, while beautiful, looks like it would be completely relevant in 2018. Today's trends tend towards bolder lines, sustainable aesthetics and more functional forms, which the Sportback just doesn't achieve. It really doesn't look very futuristic even today.
There's not much wrong under the hood though - the engines, from the 2.0 TFSI to the 3.0 TFSI in the SQ5 model, offer solid performance. But there is nothing revolutionary here either. All versions use proven technology, but it does not bring additional value compared to competitors. Many will rightly say: "We've seen this before."
Three engines are available, including a 2.0 TDI diesel (204 hp, 400 Nm), which can handle more than most driving needs. If you are looking for a gasoline classic, there is a 2.0 TFSI with the same power (204 HP, 340 Nm). For serious enthusiasts, there is the SQ5 Sportback with a 3.0 TFSI engine that develops 367 hp (550 Nm). Acceleration to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds is not only speed, but a statement that a gasoline engine can do it, and not just an electric one.
Quattro drive remains standard on the more powerful variants, while base versions offer front-wheel drive with the option to upgrade to quattro. Gearing is still only 7-speed.
The interior is a technological paradise. Three screens – including a special screen for the passenger – bring a new level of digitization. There's also a 13-inch infotainment screen that connects you to everything you need, from navigation to music apps.
But beware: reviewers have warned that the MMI system is a bit complicated for non-tech users. And it takes time to get used to it. At a time when things are being simplified, Audi is overcomplicating them. At the same time, it feels like there are too many buttons and everything is reminiscent of 1980 rather than a car from 2024, especially when looking at the driver's door.
The Q5 Sportback faces some tough competition. The BMW X4 is still the dynamic king, while the Mercedes GLC Coupe remains the luxury favourite. However, Audi offers better digitization and design freshness, which puts it in a good light.
Love at first sight or swan song
Audi Q5 Sportback it is a visual delight and a technical excess, with some compromises. With a base price of €54,800 (bizarrely high for a car powered by a dinosaur-derived derivative), it's more expensive than the regular Q5, but the SQ5 prices with 85,400 euros they set new standards among sports SUVs. If you value aesthetics and technology over utility, this is the car for you. But if you need space, stick with the classic Q5 or check out the competition. The latter hand in hand, makes cars with more character.
Audi is with the model Q5 Sportback proved that it can combine sportiness and luxury and a lack of creativity.
