The best movies of 2019: 5 top movies of this year

What are the best movies of 2019? The year is coming to an end and it is right to choose the "crème de la crème" of world cinema. Here are the top 5 movies of this year.

2019 served us with some great movies. But which ones are they really? the best movies of 2019, which glued us straight to the movie screens?

Psychological horror

The Lighthouse (2019)

Robert Eggers, the director of the acclaimed rural thriller The Witch, is back this year with a hypnotic, hallucinatory, 35mm psychological thriller about two lighthouse keepers on a remote Atlantic island at the end of the 19th century. Silent Ephraim toils day after day with repairs and maintenance, while only the elderly Thomas is allowed to operate the signal light at night. Tired of hard work, Ephraim becomes increasingly suspicious of his companion. But his strange apparitions may not just be the result of fatigue and envy. At the Cannes Film Festival, the horror film Lighthouse won the FIPRESCI International Film Critics Association Award.

Drama

Marriage Story (2019)

Divorce is a cataclysm that destroys the past, present and future, and also forces someone to "configure" himself anew. Noah Baumbach's In Marriage Story rocks with its extraordinary authenticity and insight. The divorce between Brooklyn director Charlie (Adam Driver) and actress Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) begins amicably, but soon turns into an expensive and traumatizing legal battle waged by their lawyers (Laura Dern, Ray Liotta) and, at the same time, figuratively (in some (for a moment, literally) drag their underage son (Azhy Robertson) into the war. No film has ever been so true to this subject, and some of the credit certainly goes to Driver and Johansson, whose superb performance is as subtle as it is painfully true.

Crime drama

The Irishman (2019)

Martin Scorsese has teamed up with his favorite stars (including Al Pacino) in his new film The Irishman. This serves as his "last word" in the gangster film genre, which he elevated to greatness with 1990's Good Guys and 1995's Casino. Using a revolutionary (and largely effective) CGI aging system, it is for dozens years rejuvenated its cast. The film is an adaptation of Charles Brandt's book I Heard You Paint Houses and shows the crime-ridden life of Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro), the "enforcer" of the Bufalino mafia family (Joe Pesci) and the mysterious disappearance of trade unionist Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino), who Sheeran also killed him in 1975. Scorsese's film is at the same time a drama about the passage of time and the impact – or lack thereof – that regrets, betrayals, immorality have on the human soul.

Drama

Pain and glory (Dolor y gloria, 2019)

“I hate autofiction,” says the elderly mother of filmmaker Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas). It's a wry nod to the rooted reality of director Pedro Almodóvar's dark yet joyfully cathartic new film. The film consists of a “series of encounters” by Mallo: some taking place in the present, others he remembers. For example, his childhood, when he and his parents went to a village near Valencia in search of a better life. Or the first lust, your first love in Madrid, the pain of parting when love was still fresh and hot, writing as the only medicine to forget what cannot be forgotten, the discovery of cinema and the feeling of immense emptiness that emerges from helplessness keep making movies... Pain and Glory is about creation, about how difficult it is to separate creation from one's own life, and about the passions that give meaning and hope. Antonio Banderas won the best actor award for his role as Mallo at this year's Cannes.

Thriller/Drama

Joker (2019)

Even before the release of the film about the most famous villain in the comic book world, it was rumored that the "new" Joker, Joaquin Phoenix, would be awarded an Oscar for the role that marked the already legendary Jack Nicholson and the late Heath Ledger. And who is this famous new Joker who earned an 8-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival? The future Joker, now Arthur Fleck, is a poor and mentally ill man who has an immense desire to become a stand-up comedian. In order to support himself and his mother, he performs as a mascot in front of a store or as a clown at parties. When three "dressers" brutally descend on him one day on the subway, Arthur snaps and kills his first three victims. In doing so, he inspires a protest movement, a movement against the elite. With this, Joker prepares an excellent field for insightful social commentary. The film is thus not only an exploration of a man who has been discarded by society, but also a reminder to the modern world.
