Blackmagic has introduced a new, Pro version of its Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, which is said to eliminate some of the "pain points" of its predecessor. So they add a tilting, brighter screen (and an optional electronic viewfinder mount), a bigger battery, and built-in ND filters.
While the new features still won't make the camera ideal for consumers, they will bring some quality improvements to filmmakers and video production houses "on a budget" - especially tilting screen. If you have used the camera before Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, then you know that it can be an ergonomic nightmare when you try to shoot handheld or at a high or low angle. The ability to tilt the screen up or down will make the camera easier to use and may even eliminate the need for an external screen depending on how you shoot.
The original screen of the Pocket Cinema 6K camera is difficult to see outdoors, but the Pro has two different solutions for this. One of these two is that the screen now works on 1,500 threads, which is as bright or brighter than most displays designed for cameras, and should help display visibility in bright sunlight. The second is optional OLED electronic viewfinder worth US$500, which uses a dedicated connector.
It uses a larger battery than its predecessor to power it all, but Blackmagic only quotes an hour of screen recording at 50% brightness (though even that's an improvement over its predecessor's roughly 45 minutes).
More exciting, especially for those who do a lot of outdoor photography, are built-in ND filters. There are four filters built into the camera that block the light (by two, four, six EV) when the sun shines a bit too brightly. Add to that two mini-XLR connectors and the Pro is a nice upgrade to the original Pocket 6K camera. The camera is also more competitive with Canon's C100 Mark II, which has a similar Super-35 sensor, EF mount and built-in ND.
If the stars and various warnings put you off buying the original version of the Blackmagic, the Pro version might be worth another look - especially since all these extra features come at a relatively low price, 2,135 euros.
