BMW 220d – a small athlete with the genes of real gran turismo coupés

The coupé unit in the previous edition is so rare on our roads that we could already talk about it as an exotic. The fact that the design indicated that it was only a series 1 fitted rear took its toll, as few are willing to pay that much for it. The test 220d offered a concrete measure of sportiness and plenty of driving pleasure, only the price of 52 thousand made us think.

At BMW, they realized this and in accordance with the new generation of the coupé model based on the series 1, they gave it its own name and raised the number. And that's how the duo was born, to whom they dedicated their own and above all more consistent and consequently more pleasingly shaped nose vehicles. By doing this, they achieved that it looks more prestigious, which is certainly more to the customers' liking. Now it looks as if they have started completely over with the development or design, and rightly so.

The front makes all the (necessary) difference compared to the one and hands down it's much nicer than that.

Equally pleasing is the rear, which again reminiscent of the 4 series or at least larger models Bavarian stamps. It's a different story inside, where the two related models are very similar, but frankly, no changes were even necessary. This is because the interior of both the unit and now the 2 series is expectedly modern, and at the same time brings the expected mixture of elegance and sportiness.

The sports package further reinforces the sports mission

The latter steps even more to the fore in the package equipment sport line, and the owner can additionally reinforce the sportiness with sports steering wheel and front seats, and willing leather and conclusions in form seams in red. Such an interior looks very prestigious, although a bit dark. Even better than this steering wheel, we would see it in its place M-spot steering wheel, but spinning even this one without the letter M is a great pleasure, because it is at the very top in terms of accuracy and informativeness. The eight-speed also performs equally well automatic transmission and system adjusting driving dynamics, where the mode eco pro it still cuts too much wings to an otherwise great engine.

It is easy enough to enter the second row thanks to the large enough doors, but it is true that this requires a lot of space in the parking lot. Missed we are too belt feeders, and the front seats can be pushed back nicely at the push of a button, and a nice opening opens up in front of the passengers of the second row, which makes it easier to get in. In the second row a lot of space is expected, but only fortwopeople, which must be at most medium height for a sufficiently comfortable journey.

The driver's workspace and the dashboard are familiar from the very beginning and are largely reminiscent of those in larger Bavarian models, which can only be considered a plus. The quality of materials and finishing are at a high level.

Extras for another "unit"

In addition to the standard equipment, the tester also had a number of extras, in addition to those already mentioned above: 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive M chassis, adaptive bi-xenon lights, cruise control with brake function, variable sports steering, BMW Professional navigation, parking aids and much more of this. All this results in the fact that the price with 32,600 euros jumped right up 52 thousand. If we can praise the basic price considering the power of the engine and everything else, 20 thousand for all the additional equipment is absolutely too much.

The sporty front seats hug the body perfectly, and the extra payment for them is a moderate 512 euros, and the electric adjustment in practically all directions is an additional thousand. Leather will save you €1,660.

Under the hood, she was well known to everyone 2.0 liter diesel option with the mark 20d at the end of the name, with maximum measured power 135 kW. The engine proved to be more than powerful enough to drive 1,465 kilograms of a heavy vehicle, but at the same time its economy is surprising. When accelerating, the engine gets to work quickly and pulls well, up to a diesel-high 5,000 rpm, and even with more dynamic driving, its thirst does not increase excessively. We used honey with it in the test 5.5 and 6.5 liters, where the first number is larger for calm but not slow driving, and the second is already a concrete measure of acceleration and revving. Most will use it around six liters or a little under, which is a commendable number.

The rear, like the front, is much more consistent than the first generation coupe based on the series 1, and it also looks more prestigious (read: more expensive) than the latter.

Excellent driving dynamics and engine

Driving dynamics, from the powerful chassis and suspension, to olong engine-gearbox connections and the aforementioned steering system. The driver has throughout good feeling about the happenings under the wheels, although the car requires a skilled driver due to the amount of power and torque. When exaggerating, he takes the reins excellent, but also a little nervous electronics, who has the rather difficult task of taming all this cavalry. But the position on the road and the driving characteristics are extremely good and satisfy the coupé design of the vehicle. Seen as a whole, the 2 series has gained a lot compared to the 1 series, and the Bavarians have moved it away from the latter just right, so that it does not look just like its "derivative". It is true, however, that the price still increases too quickly with the addition of equipment, and this is where the 2 series can lose the battle against larger household models. It is from an equally powerful four, still concrete 11 thousand cheaper, which again speaks in her favor.
