BMW iX: an unusual BMW for an electrified future

Electric BMWs will be different!

BMW iX

BMW hasn't been making electric cars since yesterday. His i brand has been synonymous with electric excellence among premium brands for years. i3 is a bestseller. The new BMW iX is the next bold step in the electric story of BMW. Stories about the future.

It's a 7 series a technological marvel, which with its features aims to surpass the model we knew as a study iNext and will hit the roads with a name BMW iX already next year. Although it is still in the final development phase, BMW has revealed practically all the details about this slightly "specially" designed BMW.

A large SUV, which you see in the bottom picture gallery, is based on a new architecture developed specifically for the Bavarian manufacturer battery vehicles. It has many advantages over its predecessors, where BMW places the greatest emphasis on advances in automated driving technologies and various digital services. For example, level computing power was developed to process more than 20 times the amount of data of previous models. This means that BMW also bit into the very or completely autonomous driving.

In terms of external dimensions, yes iX located very close to BMW's classic internal combustion models and has the same length as model X5, a comparable height as X6 and the same wheel size as X7. All conditions that many of us would anticipated the pinnacle of industrial design, but the BMW iX does not overly impress a good part of the audience. Apparently they want to at BMW in a new recognizable direction their electric vehicles a little too forcefully. Otherwise minimalistic design, expresses extraordinary a lot of futurism, but also lines and shapes that we haven't seen before considered attractive. The oversized front fascia at the front doesn't help the harmony of the design either. It seems like the whole design concept follows function rather than design.

to Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president of design at BMW, told the media: “The BMW iX shows how we can give new technologies a very modern and emotional design. Although the car is technologically complex, it seems very clear and simple. The BMW iX offers a mobile living space that will make people feel relaxed, where the intelligence of the car is there when you need it. "

iX is the first BMW's production vehicle with a hexagonal steering wheel, which the automaker says “enhances easy access and allows the driver a better view of the information screen.” The next attention-grabbing feature of the cabin is the electric console with seat buttons, which is now mounted on the door panels, similar to what a certain "star" company based in Stuttgart has been doing for years. It is also worth noting that it has a new BMW iX the largest glass surface, which has ever been fitted to a BMW model.

Powering the large SUV is BMW's all-new fifth-generation electric powertrain. The set represents two electric motors with a total power of "more than 500 horsepower" or 375 kilowatts, which is enough to push the iX from rest to a speed of 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in less than 5.0 seconds.

Thanks to its huge battery with 100 kWh, the family large SUV iX should drive up to 482 km electric range according to the standard (EPA FTP-75). Or rather 600 kilometers according to the WLTP standard.

Charging capabilities iX is even more impressive, as fast charging with direct current up to 200 kilowatts allows the large SUV to fill up the "electric tank" in 40 minutes 70 percent of capacity. In addition, it should be fast 10-minute charging achieved sufficient energy to overcome additional 120 kilometers. Exactly what we all need, who are always worried about the range of electric vehicles.

About the exact date when it will be iX hit the assembly lines and consequently also on the road not much is known yet, but BMW says that production should start sometime in the second half in 2021 in the factory in Dingolfing. The introduction to the market is planned for the end of 2021.
