The Calefax wind quintet consists of 5 extremely talented Dutchmen, who convince us with their passion that the wind quintet is the best instrumental band in the world.
This flattering review of the visiting ensemble Calefax, was published in The Times. The ensemble of top musicians has breathed new life into classical chamber music over three decades of activity. The line-up of oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet and bassoon was a real challenge to skip the centuries.
With imaginative adaptations and unusual initiatives Calefax opens new chapters and blurs the boundaries between different musical genres and cultural environments. The masterfully designed and refined program is outlined from the Middle Ages to modern times. Special attention is paid to the performance of new works, which the ensemble also wins at its competition. Original adaptations collected in Calefax Edition, they pioneerly draw an adaptation - a composition on a new musical map of forms.

Arrangements are prepared by the bassoonist Alban Wesley, one of the co-founders, the youngest member of the group Oliver Boekhoorn, and the two bass clarinetists are among the most ardent creators of covers Jelte Althuis and a saxophonist Raaf Hekkema. The saxophonist is especially motivated by adventurous, almost impossible projects. Calefax imparts his knowledge in innovative workshops around the world, overseen by a clarinetist Ivar Berix, and every year also prepares a big musical celebration as part of its festival PAN, in which the members of the ensemble are both performers and hosts.
