Canon EOS R5: an uncompromising flagship that sets new standards

Canon has announced the EOS R5, by far the best full-size mirrorless camera they've ever made!

After 2018's EOS R and last year's cheaper EOS RP model, Canon returns to the market with EOS R5, with a serious professional showhorse with a price to match the specs. In the end, we will have to shell out as much as 4,850 euros for it (only the body), which means that this is it Canon's second most expensive camera, right behind the new 1D X Mark III DSLR.

The Canon EOS R5 takes photos with resolution 45MP at a speed of up to 20 frames per second. A mechanical shutter is also available, which allows a shooting speed of up to 12 frames per second. You can capture superb cinematographic videos in 12-bit format RAW 8K or record footage in 4K (4:2:2, 10-bit) with up to 120 frames per second, allowing you to create amazing slow motion effects. For those who need the ultimate in 4K quality, the 4K HQ camera mode reproduces stunning detail at frame rates up to 30p with upsampling of 8K footage.

Advanced automatic focus is programmed with artificial intelligence with deep learning. This allows the EOS R5 camera to recognize and track the subject's face and eyes with new levels of accuracy and precision, even when viewed from the side. The image stabilization built into the camera itself works in harmony with the lens stabilizer and thus provides up to 8 levels of protection against camera shake.

The EOS R5 also has advanced electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 5.76 MP, equipped with a 3.15-inch Vari-Angle touch screen with 2.1 million dots. This one opens outwards and you can rotate 270 degrees, which allows you to comfortably take photos from unusual angles. The screen can also be rotated and stowed to face the camera body, giving it protection. When you bring the EOS R5 to your eye, a sensor on the back of the camera automatically switches from the screen to the electronic viewfinder and vice versa. At the same time, you can choose different settings depending on whether the screen is open to the outside or not.

The camera also uses an always-on connection Bluetooth with low power consumption, thus maintaining a continuous connection with the smart device. With the help of the program Canon Camera Connect so photographers can browse, review and transfer photography remotely.

The magnesium alloy housing withstands the demanding conditions of professional photography and is protected against dust and moisture. It is powered by an advanced new battery that enables 20 percent more capacity than older batteries, meaning you could shoot an average of 490 shots on a single charge.

If you find the R5 out of reach, or shooting in 8K isn't your priority, Canon has a new camera available EOS R6, which comes with a lower price. The design is more or less the same as the R5, except the R6 uses a 20.1MP sensor, meaning it can shoot 4K/60 or 1080p/120. The viewfinder resolution drops to a still solid 3.69MP, the touchscreen is slightly smaller and lower resolution. And the price? 2,899 euros without lens.

Both Canon EOS R5 and R6 can be expected on store shelves end of this month!
