Something magical is happening in the universe, right above our heads. Every year, the Orionids, a meteor shower originating from Halley's Comet, delight us with their light. The year 2023 will not be an exception, as one of the most beautiful displays of this celestial event promises to happen.

The Orionids, originating in the direction of the constellation Orion the Hunter, are named after the star Betelgeuse, which is a bright, reddish star in Orion. This meteor shower is special because it originates from the dust and particles left behind by Halley's Comet, one of the most famous comets in our solar system. Halley's comet orbits the sun approximately every 76 years, losing between one and three meters of material each time. Nevertheless, its size is impressive, measuring about 8 to 15 km.

Orionids: When and where to observe?

The best time to observe the Orionids in 2023 will be between the night of October 21 and the morning of October 22. Although the peak is scheduled for October 22, the morning of October 21 will also offer a wonderful view of the sky full of shooting stars. The Orionids are visible from the end of September to the end of November, but their greatest activity is right around these two dates. The best time to observe the sky is after midnight and in the early morning hours before dawn, when the sky is darkest.

What can we expect?

Under ideal conditions, under a dark, moonless sky, the Orionids peak at about 10 to 20 meteors per hour. These meteors are known for their speed, entering the Earth's atmosphere at about 66 km/s. Although the meteors of this swarm are usually fainter, they often leave behind luminous trails that last for several seconds. Sometimes, however, we can also observe extremely bright meteors that split into several parts.

The Orionids are one of the most beautiful meteor showers that can be observed every year. Their association with Halley's Comet and their spectacular display in the sky make them something special. Although Halley's comet only visits our sky every 76 years, its particles offer us a wonderful celestial spectacle every year. Don't miss this opportunity and take time to observe the sky in October 2023. It's an opportunity to become part of something bigger and feel connected to the universe.
