CES 2018: Hyundai Nexo FCV, an intelligent fuel cell crossover

Hyundai Nexo FCV

Hyundai is one of the manufacturers trying to make progress in the field of hydrogen fuel cells. Bringing this technology to the masses was entrusted to the newest member of the Hyundai family - the Nex. Compared to its predecessor, which also drove with the help of fuel cells and was based on the Tucson, the Nexo is faster, more reliable, more spacious and even more efficient.

Hyundai Nexo is like Tucson so called crossover, with the difference that it has its own platform, which is specially adapted for z-powered cars hydrogen fuel cells. This places the hydrogen storage tanks in a more convenient place behind the rear seats, which helps to make better use of the interior space. He has Nexo three hydrogen collectors with capacity 6.3 kilograms, which is one kilogram more than its predecessor, and the entire system is just 16 kilograms lighter. The system for converting hydrogen into electricity is now smaller, and all moving parts are located under the hood, which helps to noise reduction in the passenger cabin. Hydrogen cells contribute 95 kW of power, the battery, which is located at the bottom of the luggage compartment, and additional ones 40 kW. It is available to us in common 135 kW of energy.

The Nexo has a more powerful electric motor that it now has 120 kW (163 HP) of power, which is 20 kW (27 hp) more than its predecessor. The hydrogen cell system has been thoroughly tested at a level equivalent to ten years of use or 160,000 kilometers driven. Testing took place in both hot and extremely cold environments in order to maximize the reliability of the fuel cells. With full hydrogen tanks and a full battery, the Nex can be transported up to 560 kilometers, and filling the hydrogen only takes us 5 minutes of time. It sounds great, but the technology still needs to develop a bit so that the range of hydrogen filling stations will be larger. But if you go camping, the Nexo has enough "charge" in it to provide the necessary electricity for the consumption of the caravan.

With the Nex, Hyundai introduces new technologies in the field autonomous driving and uses artificial intelligence, in order to provide the driver with the most unique experience behind the wheel. Nexo is also sustainable, as it produces no harmful emissions, is intelligent and has a bunch of assistance systems to help the driver.
