City test: Toyota aygo – X marks the city where the fun is

The Toyota aygo brings a lot of freshness and color to the segment of urban toddlers, as well as above-average equipment that even models a size larger would not be able to resist. Thanks to the new chassis, the little one now drives much better, which brings out even more the bouncy three-cylinder engine, which is most at home in the city, and it doesn't even defend the highways. It's just too close to the yaris in terms of price.

In the segment small city cars the competition has gotten tougher recently, and with that there is less and less room for mistakes, and the content and technique must be adapted to the typology of buyers, who are mostly young (or younger).

The nose of the vehicle is flexible, and the lights follow the contours of the virtual letter X. LED daytime running lights are commendably standard, as are the thin 15-inch tires on alloy wheels.

Tem the trend they are at Toyota for sure listened, because at first glance the aygo looks lively, modern and intended for the young and such at heart. The front part is clearly visible the letter X, which was drawn with the help of inserts reminiscent of piano black, lights (both main and lower LED daytime running lights) follow these contours nicely. The front part thus offers a rounded and independent whole, so that you simply will not mistake it for any of the competitors.

Of course, there is less flexibility from the side, but the designers have also intended a sporty side silhouette that grows towards the rear and reinforced it with chrome strip on the lower part of the side windows, which is a real rarity in this size and price class. The rear, however, is angular and sharp, where the black color once again dominates, as the trunk lid is entirely made of black-coated glass, which is surrounded on each side by upright and pointed lights. The bumper is also finished dynamically, which is again dressed in a combination of black and ion red and seemingly draws the letter X.

As for the standard equipment, the aygo surprises many times, this domain also includes the electrically movable canvas roof, which also seals surprisingly well (sound).

Toyota aygo brings only so many changes inside that it is difficult to talk about the fact that it is a facelift or a cosmetic renovation, when we get the information on the table that they have given it a complete new chassis and suspension, but we can see how concretely things were handled at Toyota (and PSA last but not least, since it is still a trio of models). The passenger cabin is simple and refined, the monotony is broken by colorful inserts made of shiny plastic, which work pleasantly, and as a whole it is surprisingly non-monotonous for the brand in question. The gauges in front of the driver are of a more basic type in terms of size, the small one for revs is a bit awkwardly placed and sometimes obscured, but otherwise everything is where you expect and (what) you need.

The interior is uncharacteristically colorful for the brand, the driver's seat is commendably adjustable in height. In terms of equipment, the aygo overshadows some of its larger competitors.

The center console is dominated by a large one seven inch touch screen, through which you manage and read practically everything, including data (preferably serial) reversing cameras and navigation devices (the latter requires an additional payment of just under €500). The test aygo, in addition to automatic climate control and a smart key, also offered all possible connectivity, which on the surface worked very well, and the leather steering wheel also has buttons for the audio device and for controlling the phone, which are not illuminated. There is also a button behind the steering wheel speed limiter (it's a shame it doesn't have cruise control as well).

The seats are cute, as they recline from one piece, the graphics look youthful, and even found their way to the sides imitation leather. In terms of space, in the first row, it is completely ok, in the second row, it can run out, especially for the knees. Trunk it is also suitable for the segment and measurements, its shape still bothers me, because it is very short and deep. Above it is an imaginative soft shelf, and the seats in front of it can be divided in half.

The 168-liter basic trunk is exactly like that (basic), the competition can offer significantly more space here.

He was hiding under the steep cover 1.0-liter three-cylinder, which we have known for a long time, but is still developing 51 kW and 95 Nm of torque, and the motor (or grinder) likes to rev very much, and with it the aygo is very interestingly jumpy, as it practically reaches 50 km/h in the first gear, 80 in the second, and even 120 km/h in the third and a little across. This definitely helps the driver on AC, where ayxgo is definitely a side player, and with the right driver and timely shifting, you will also quite rightly occupy the overtaking lane. Consumption it spins when driving moderately about six liters, and in courting it reaches a seven, and much more difficult even beyond. Significant saving also draws a five among the gauges, albeit for a short time.

In Aygo, everything "happens" on a large touch-sensitive screen. This one offers excellent connectivity, a reversing camera, and for an additional 500 euros, also factory navigation. However, the shiny center console is sensitive to fingerprints.

The sound insulation is suitable for the dimensions and the segment, even if it is in the upper half. In fact, it is also necessary to lease a quality one electrically adjustable canvas roof, which extends through the entire roof of the vehicle. When we take this into account, we see that the sealing is even very good. Among the disadvantages are the somewhat hollow sound when closing the door and the fact that the side windows in the second row move only to the siden, and the transparency of the outside is limited through a smaller line.

But these are little things that few will notice. Many more will notice its agility in the city, its almost complete equipment, and unfortunately also the fact that it is already forced into a segment where the Yaris dominates inside the "house", which also has a much larger customer base (also due to its long-term stock). . But the vast majority will 11,460 (or 12,075) euro "greens" preferred to buy the previously mentioned model, which is much more useful, although also more ready-made and less cute than the aygo. But rationality still prevails among Slovenian buyers, and this is (unjustifiably) detrimental to ayg.
