Hallstatt, Salzkammergut

The small picturesque town of Hallstatt, located by the lake of the same name, is often called one of the most beautiful towns in Austria and even in Europe. Apart from enjoying rock climbing, hiking and boating there, you can also visit the Beinhaus (House of Bones) which displays the human remains that are there due to the lack of space for graves. Although it may sound morbid, this experience can be something very different, very beautiful and humbling. It is also worth visiting the ice and salt caves, which are truly spectacular. It will take you a good 3 hours to get to Hallstatt from Ljubljana.

Predarlska (Vorarlberg)

The mountainous region boasts beautiful scenery and stunning architecture. It's more than just a new place to explore – it's a treat for our eyes. The area presents a unique view for any hiker, explorer or artist. The landscapes between Lake Constance and the mountains are ideal for long walks – especially with peaks reaching 2,000 meters high. Of course, the area is full of natural wonders, one of the most popular is Verwall, which is one of the largest protected areas in the European Natura 2000 network. Predarlska is more than 600 kilometers away by car (almost a 7-hour drive), so we suggest that you go there go on a multi-day trip.

Vienna

The Austrian capital is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Its rich history mixes with the modern pulse of the city - street theaters, ballet, opera, musicals, art galleries and exhibitions are what give the dynamism and liveliness that we encounter at every turn. In Vienna, several imperial palaces await us, stunning museums overlooking magnificent squares and, of course, the Hofburg, the impressive home of the Habsburg rulers. The fusion of fast modern life and historic architecture makes Imperial Vienna a truly spectacular city. For the 9th consecutive year, it is also the best place to live according to research, which they do at Mercer. It will take you about 3 and a half hours to reach Vienna by car from Ljubljana.

Alpbach, Tyrol

Alpbach has been voted the most beautiful village in Austria, and it's really not hard to see why. The lovely traditional Alpine village is located among the majestic mountains and is the perfect starting point for the ski slopes in winter. It is full of picturesque wooden farmhouses, pastures with cattle and locals who are masters in traditional crafts. If you would like to experience Austrian life once upon a time and enjoy a village where time stands still, then Alpbach is the perfect choice. Since it is a good 4 hours away from Ljubljana, we suggest that you also stop here on a multi-day trip.

Graz

Graz is the second largest city in Austria, although it may not look like it at first glance. It is a very calm city, overflowing with beautiful architecture and youthful spirit. It is a vibrant artistic center that fits perfectly with Renaissance courtyards and Baroque palaces. Thanks to the large number of students, the nightlife in Graz is booming. If you are not one of the artists or partiers, then Graz is worth visiting at least for the gardens of the Eggenberg Palace, where you can relax among proud peacocks. By car, it will take about 2 hours to get from Ljubljana to Graz.

Ostrovica Castle, Launsdorf, Austrian Carinthia

Many consider it to be the most impressive medieval castle in Austria, and for good reason. It stands on a 160-meter-high dolomite rock, which makes it look like something from a fairy tale. Between Easter and October (this year the castle will be open from April 1 to October 31), certain parts of the castle are open to visitors, and dogs are also allowed to enter. Even before they enter the castle, they can walk along a 620 meter long path, through 14 interesting fortified gates. The ticket for adults is 15 euros, and for children from 6 to 15 years old it is 8 euros. It will take you an hour and a half to reach the castle by car from Ljubljana.
