Why is it better to pay off a loan and work in an office than to travel the world and be a freelancer?

Most likely, you have already come across stories on the Internet where people escaped from the routine and today live on an island and earn 3 times more money than before. With this, they tell us that working in an office is horror and fear. On the other hand, traveling around the world, "freelancing", 4-hour working days and enjoying every moment are the pinnacle of life. But that's only one side of the story.

Why do we humans avoid regular jobs so much? Maybe this one has some advantages? More below.

Where does the freedom trend come from?

The desire to "escape the system" is as old as time itself. The ancient Greeks are on hedonism viewed as a philosophy of pleasure. People in ancient India found their peace in Buddhism as in the rejection of desires, and when problems arose, they retreated into meditation. An even greater rejection of routine occurred among the hippies of the 1950s when they wanted to escape the "American dream" (stable job, house, family). They never managed to build a stable economic or cultural model, and their attempts to become free unfortunately ended in various alcohol and drug festivals.

In the 21st century, the desire to avoid commitment gradually transformed into a new trend - ghosting. In the professional world, that means yes the person does not appear at the previously arranged interview for work he doesn't come to work and she doesn't even announce it, or she announces that she is sick, and in the end she reveals herself on social media, where she is enjoying a glass of wine in a photo. The number of people who succumbabout ghosting, should be on the global market grew by 10 to 20 percent. And why do people just want to disappear?

  • 85 percent of them leave without warning because they don't want a conflict with their employer
  • 60 percent of them are tortured and underpaid

Years ago, it was customary for employers not to review the sent job application and not respond, today the trend is reversed - today they potential employees those who do not come forward.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a perfect job.

There is no such thing as a perfect job.
There is no such thing as a perfect job.

The development of technology has made many things easier, but also made many things more difficult. Social media convinces us that it is ordinary life is not cool. It's cool to travel, enjoy and find your mission. And ghosting for many, it is the perfect way to find the "perfect" job and avoid problems and conflicts.

Why doesn't the perfect job exist?

  • The first impression of any activity will fade over time. A pleasant feeling when we do something new to our brain dopamine, which makes things interesting, everything happens fast, and we are happy. But every job has its own cycle of repetitive actions that become a habit. Everything gets boring eventually.
  • It takes time to master something. And a conscious effort. The principle 10,000 hours it is only partly true, as repeating the same actions over and over again is not enough. We need changes and more complex tasks, in which case just learning something new will take 3000 to 4000 hours.
  • Finding ourselves (our passions, our mission) is a vague purpose. The brain has a hard time keeping track of long periods of time when there are no clear boundaries. Therefore, when we are studying, for example, time passes very slowly (schedule), and if we do not have a plan for several years, time passes quickly, and we do not even notice it.
  • An easy job is not necessarily a good job. Many times we feel that the things we are called to do should be easy. But as the task gets harder and harder, we lose interest and start looking for a new job. Scientists from of Stanford University they recommend not looking for passion, but developing it.

The idea that each of us must find our mission is what makes people choose temporary jobs that allow them to they travel around the world looking for each other, or try things that are considered prestigious and popular: designers, IT specialists or bloggers. Experts believe that it will only be in the US by 2020 31.7 million bloggers. A million new ones appear every year.

In the film Eat, Pray, Love, a woman is presented who travels the world alone in order to find herself.
In the film Eat, Pray, Love, a woman is presented who travels the world alone in order to find herself.

Book Eat, pray, love was released in 2006, and the film starring Julia Roberts was its adaptation. It presents a woman who, in order to find herself, travel the world by yourself. But few people know that it is Elizabeth Gilbert a professional writer who has been gathering experience for 13 years before this book. She has built a career in journalism: her work has appeared in GQ, The New York Time Magazine and Esquire, and her first book won the Hemingway Canadian Literary Award. Eat, pray, love her work as a professional writer, and traveling was her job. When she came up with the book concept, she and the publisher agreed to get an advance to pay for the trip. No, she wasn't looking.

The unobvious advantages of ordinary life

  • Stability is important for a child's development. They are scientists researched the impact of stability on the feeling of security, on success, education and behavior. The unstable job of the parents or the loss of their job is said to represent a great stress for the child.
  • Boredom is the driving force behind creativity. The word boredom has a very negative connotation and people try to avoid it. But it should be precisely because of boredom generate better ideas. When there is nothing to do, the brain dips into the subconscious, pulls out interesting facts and turns them into something new.

Our brain does not allow us to imagine how we will see ourselves in old age and to find out what will be important to us then. It is not our fault that current tasks seem more important to us than those that await us in the future.

No one knows what exactly awaits him in his old age.
No one knows what exactly awaits him in his old age.

We have too many disturbing factors:

  • We get thousands of notifications every day. The modern perception of reality even has its own name - twitterization of thinking. Books are getting shorter, movies are getting simpler.
  • Being able to edit photos with tools like Photoshop makes people feel like they do they are not attractive enough.
  • Social media can be more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol. Instagram should have the biggest negative impact on our health: causes namely anxiety and the fear that we are missing something.

But if we can admit that these factors play a powerful role in our lives, then we can begin to realize that our time can be spent on something much more important!

Life is ours, so the path we will take also depends on us. All that matters is that we are happy. And if you're sitting in the office today, smile. This is not the worst thing that could happen to you! 🙂

What makes you happy?
What makes you happy?
