Even Coca-Cola is embarking on the path of sustainability. Thus, they presented the world's first bottles made from waste plastic.
Coca-Cola has introduced the world's first bottles made from recycled plastic waste from the ocean. The company thus issued 300 bottles, v 25 percent made from marine debris, which were collected by volunteers during 84 beach clean-ups in Spain and Portugal.
Recycling is the result of a partnership between Coca-Cola, a Dutch start-up Ioniqa Technologies and companies Indorama Adventures, one of Coca-Cola's PET plastic suppliers. They used Ioniq Technologies for processing depolymerization technology, where PET was broken down into monomers that allow the material to be reused. These were then sent to Indorama, where they polymerized the new plastic.
"In the near future, enhanced recycling will be introduced on a commercial scale using waste from existing recyclers, including pre-recycled plastics and lower quality recycled material," they said at Coca-Cola. Starting in 2020, Coca-Cola plans to increase the content of recycled material in their bottles. Their goal is to make single-use plastic "disappear", both inside and outside of their business. If the idea is realized also in the field of mass production, it will be Coca-Cola the first company in the FMCG segment, which will start selling drinks and food in plastic waste packaging.
