Cult disco club Studio 54: photos that testify to hedonism in the late seventies

Nearly forty years after Studio 54 opened its doors to party hungry movie, music and fashion stars, it remains the most famous nightclub America has ever known. This month, Swedish photojournalist Hasse Persson stunned the public with a collection of photographs that bear first-hand witness to the hedonism he captured on film between 1977 and 1980. He collected them in a book simply titled Studio 54, and we will try to conjure the atmosphere of the disco era for you with some photos from the book.

Studio 54 is the most famous and glorified disco in the world. It all started in 1977 at 245 West 54th Street in New York, at a time when disco music was at its peak. The establishment attracted celebrities and a carefully filtered mix of guests. Anyone could be a star on the Studio 54 dance floor. Regular customers at the nightclub included, among others Andy Warhol, Liza Minnelli, Bianca Jagger, Elizabeth Taylor, Halston, Mick Jagger, Jerry Hall, Debbie Harry, Grace Jones, Michael Jackson, Calvin Klein, Elton John, Tina Turner, Divine, Margaret Trudeau, Sylvia Miles, Francesco Scavullo, Truman Capote, Margaux Hemingway, Janice Dickinson, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Diana Ross, Cher, Salvador Dali, Diana Vreeland, John Travolta, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Brooke Shields and Martha Graham.
Photographer Hasse Persson it is between 1977 and 1980 spent hundreds of nights in a nightclub. He caught many hot moments on film, as well as famous faces. Black and white photos of the infamous nightclub in its heyday that have been released in his book Studio 54, and we also searched.
