Sugar in the washing machine? No, we weren't wrong. It's an old trick that will turn your gray curtains into a white masterpiece - and without ironing at all!

Curtains they are the soul of every space. They are the element that turns a house into a home, adding softness and elegance to it. But let's face it, their maintenance is often a nightmare. Over time lose their original whiteness, They turn gray from dust and cigarette smoke, and most importantly, they lose that beautiful, firm shape they had in the store.

Most people reach for aggressive chemical bleaches, which eventually destroy the delicate fibers, or we spend hours at the ironing board trying to straighten them.

But the solution to all these problems lies in sugar.

Why sugar?

It may sound strange, but sugar is one the oldest natural remedies for starching. Our grandmothers didn't have access to expensive synthetic fabric-strengthening sprays, so they had to find a different solution. Sugar acts as a natural binder. When dissolved in water and absorbed into the fabric, it creates a invisible crystal structureThis structure restores the curtains to their “factory” firmness and shape, which they lose when washed.

Even more importantly, sugar optically refreshes the color. While it doesn’t work like a chemical bleach that “eats up” dirt, it creates a light-reflecting layer on the surface of the fabric, making your curtains look sparkling white and fresh. And don’t worry – if you do the process correctly, your curtains won’t be sticky and won’t attract bugs.

Process: From gray to dazzling white

The key to success is in the correct dosage and the moment when you add the sugar. Never shake it into the drum with the washing powder, as rinsing will completely remove it. The sugar bath should be the last step.

First wash the curtains as usual. Use delicate laundry program and temperature 30 or 40 degrees Celsiusto avoid damaging the fibers.

Once the wash is finished, you have two options. The first is to soak the curtains in the tub. Dissolve about 5 to 7 tablespoons of plain white sugar in lukewarm water (depending on the amount of curtains). Submerge the curtains in this solution and let them sit for a few minutes so that the sugar water soaks into every fiber.

Second, A more practical option for those with time constraints is using the fabric softener compartment. Dissolve 3 tablespoons of sugar in a little water and pour the mixture into the fabric softener compartment just before the last rinse. This way, the machine will do the work for you.

Forget the iron

The best part of this trick isn't just the whiteness, but the fact that you can put the iron away. The sugar solution prevents creasingWhen you take the curtains out of the machine or tub, do not wring them too hard.

Hang them back on cornice while still wet. The weight of the water will pull the curtains down and flatten them, and the sugar will ensure that they “fix” into that flat shape as they dry.

When they dry, they will stand nice and firm, as if they had just come from the dry cleaners. The room will smell fresh. You can add a drop of essential oil to the sugar water to add a finishing touch.
