Cyprus: a Mediterranean beauty with Arab, African and European roots

For a long time, the Mediterranean island was considered the meeting point of three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa. This is still reflected today in the rich cultural heritage, as well as in the very division of the island. Namely, Cyprus is divided into the European part and the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. In addition to the extraordinary archaeological heritage, from Byzantine churches to monasteries, Cyprus also has a lot of picturesque hiking trails and beautiful beaches. If in the past all major surrounding empires wanted to subjugate the island, nowadays the tourists who come here no longer have these intentions. They just want to enjoy the beautiful beaches, swim in the crystal clear sea and have fun.

When to Cyprus?

The best time to visit Cyprus is just before the start of the summer season, when hordes of tourists visit the island. If you can, visit it between May and June or between September and October. During this time, the temperatures are pleasant for swimming, and the heat is quite bearable.

What should I see in Cyprus?

Cyprus boasts a rich history that is still visible today in numerous archaeological excavations and finds. Ancient Kourion is one of them. It is located on a romantic cliff and offers beautiful views of the surrounding areas and the sea level. Here you can find a series of ruins, the most famous of which are the theater and the House of Eustolios with beautifully preserved mosaics. A real archaeological treasure is also hidden in Salamis, which beautifully shows different periods in the history of Cyprus. From the remains of the ancient Greeks to the ruins of the Byzantine church, everything testifies to the fact that this city was once one of the most powerful in the Mediterranean.

One of the attractions on the island is the monastery Stavrovounis, which rises 750 meters above sea level. Due to the strict rules of the monks who still live in the monastery today, women are not allowed to enter, and men must be dressed appropriately. If you are interested in mosaics, also see the Paphos mosaic, one of the best preserved in the world. It was created sometime between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD. History buffs will definitely not be bored.

Castle of St. Hilarion it is considered one of the most beautiful Mediterranean ruins, and it served its time as a Crusader fortress. Locals claim that the castle was built by a fairy queen who seduced the shepherds in the surrounding pastures. Another eye-catcher is Kolossi Castle, on the outskirts of Limassol, which once served as a crusader fortress, but today attracts tourists due to its small size and good energy.

Cyprus is perfect for anyone who likes to wear hiking boots. From popular trails in the Troodos Mountains, including the Caledonia Trail, which ends with a magnificent waterfall, to other trails with scenic views. One of the most beautiful regions on the island is the Karpas peninsula with its golden sandy beaches with the hills in the hinterland.

Here you meet only a few tourists, especially those who are fond of hiking. In the region, you can find a series of excellent hiking trails, while discovering which you can admire the unique nature. Nature lovers should also check it out Cape Greco, a national park in the south of the island with many hiking trails as well as beaches and sea caves. Laranca is a resort that has managed to retain its local charm despite tourism.

In addition to interesting historical buildings, it is famous for its beautiful beaches and calm holiday atmosphere. There is a saltwater lake in the area where you can admire pink flamingos. Even beach lovers in Cyprus will not be left empty-handed. The island is perfect for many water sports, including water skiing and windsurfing.

How to explore Cyprus?

One of the best ways to travel around the island is to rent a car. You can find rental agencies at the airport and in all major cities. Hurry up to reserve a car in the summer, as only these are quickly occupied. You need a valid driver's license to drive, in the south you must be over 21, in the north 18 is enough. The roads are in good condition, but you should be careful, as they record a high number of accidents every year. Other transportation options include taxis, buses, and bicycles.

Covid-19 restrictions in Cyprus

Before arrival, you must complete the CyprusFlightPass, which is required to enter the country. In addition, you also need a vaccination certificate or a medical certificate, which can also be seen in the digital European certificate.
