What is a self-tanning spray?

Self-tanning sprays are cosmetic products that contain the active ingredient dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a sugar that safely reacts with the cells in the upper layer of the skin, changing their color and thus creating an appearance tan. How does self-tanning spray work?
