What is a self-tanning spray?

Self-tanning sprays are cosmetic products that contain the active ingredient dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a sugar that safely reacts with the cells in the upper layer of the skin, changing their color and thus creating an appearance tan. This effect usually lasts for a few days, after which it fades slowly and evenly, similar to a natural tan.

How does self-tanning spray work?

When you apply self-tanning spray, DHA binds to amino acids in the stratum corneum of the skin, causing a chemical reaction known as the Maillard reaction. This reaction causes a change in the color of the skin cells, which become darker, giving the skin a tanned appearance. The process usually develops in a few hours, and the final result is visible in 24 to 48 hours.
