John Dowland (1563–1626)
on the 450th anniversary of his birth
John Dowland is considered the greatest English composer of solo vocal music besides Purcell and Britten. In songs for voice and lute, he combined elements of traditional ballads, dances, songs with an ensemble of viols da gamba and madrigals, thus creating a new form. He also became famous as a virtuoso on the lute and his compositions were admired by contemporaries throughout Europe. Emma Kirkby and Jakob Lindberg are among the most famous and experienced interpreters of Dowland's music. On this year's 450th anniversary of his birth, they have compiled a selection of songs from all his collections.
